Breaking Ground is a festival of ideas and of new writing for theatre. Calling together Māori, Pasifika and global Indigenous playwrights, Breaking Ground develops new playscripts – reimagining storytelling for the stage.
In 2019, Breaking Ground celebrates 10 years of new writing and new plays crafted by Māori, Pasifika and Indigenous playwrights. Breaking Ground invites you and Te Whanganui-a-tara to join with playwrights and experience their new works in development.
Ōtautahi playwright Hohepa Waitoa (He Kura E Huna Ana) joins Honolulu based playwright Kiki Rivera (Puzzy) in leading our festival programme in 2019. Te Whanganui-a- Tara Māori and Pasifika wāhine writers’ collective, Maranga Mai, returns to Breaking Ground. Featuring women from throughout Wellington, Maranga Mai presents new work from new writers refining their craft.
The festival is presented by Tawata Productions and helmed by playwright Mīria George. Breaking Ground celebrates the powerful role of writers for the stage within any healthy creative industry.
“Their stories have become our stories – that is the power of playwriting. I look forward to the next ten years of Breaking Ground.” – Mīria George
Breaking Ground is presented in partnership with Creative New Zealand, Wellington City Council, Massey University of Wellington, Playmarket, Toi Māori Aotearoa + Kia Mau Festival.
